Revitalize Your Roof: A Quick Guide to Demossing
Is your roof starting to look a little green and grimy? Moss might be the culprit! Moss can cause damage to your roof over time, but the good news is, you can remove it easily with just a few simple steps. We’ve created a quick 1-minute video to show you exactly how to do it. Here’s a summary of the process:
Safety First
Before you start, make sure you’re equipped with the proper safety gear. Wear non-slip shoes, gloves, and safety goggles. A sturdy ladder is essential for reaching your roof safely. Always prioritize your safety throughout the process.
Step-by-Step Demossing Guide
Step 1: Sweep Away Bulky Moss Start by using a very stiff broom or brush to sweep away the bulky, loose moss from the surface of your roof. This will make the following steps more effective.
Step 2: Brush Away Stubborn Moss Use a stiff brush to tackle any stubborn moss that remains after sweeping. Be cautious to avoid damaging your shingles, but firm enough to remove the moss effectively. You can tell if you're going to hard if a lot of granules are falling off while you're brushing.
Step 3: Blow Away Debris With a leaf blower, blow away any remaining debris and moss particles from the roof and onto the ground or into the gutters. This helps in keeping the roof clean and ready for the next steps.
Step 4: Clear the Gutters Moss and debris can clog gutters, leading to water damage and other issues. Now is the best time to clean up new and olf debris in the gutters. You want them cleared and able to drain for the next step when you start to throw chemicals on the roof.
BEFORE CHEMICAL SPRAY READ THIS!!!
Always, always, always, be very cautious in applying chemical. Make sure that all plants are well soaked with water before, during and after to make sure that they don't get killed or damaged. Sodium Hypochlorite or SH is a very volatile chemical, but is harmless if diluted with water. Make sure to wear a chemical rated mask, gloves and eye protection when spraying.
Step 5: Add Chemical Treatment of Bleach Around the Roof Finally, using a spray pump mix in some gain laundry detergent and around 6% sodium hypochlorite which can be diluted from liquid pool chlorine from your local hardware store or just straight bleach. Apply a moderate layer of the chemical mix around the roof to prevent moss from growing back. You know you've done the job correctly if you see green moss turning a white chalky colour or brown if your mix is a bit on the light side with your Sodium hypochlorite mixture.
Leave it on the roof and the next time it rains, all of the soap and the chemical (that will be neutralized in about 60 minutes) will harmlessly drain off the roof and into the gutters.
